After an overview of contemporary research on the types and definitions of the concept of empathy and a synthesis of Suzanne Keen’s theory of narrative empathy, the plays of Milan Kundera and Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt are studied under the prism of the forms, mechanisms and textual representations of empathy. The concepts of variator, metatextual empathy and intertextual empathy are formulated to define the postures of Kundera and Schmitt in homage to their writing model.

Keywords: Denis Diderot; Milan Kundera; Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt; empathy; intertextuality
Antoaneta Robova Copyright (c) 2023 2023-09-17 2023-09-17 9 1 La première édition bulgare de l’ «Enfer» de Dante: représentation verbale vs représentation visuelle https://ejournal.uni-sofia.bg/index.php/Colloquia/article/view/188
The article problematises the connection between the verbal representation and the visual representation in the first Bulgarian edition of Inferno (1906). It aims to demonstrate that Gustavе Doré’s drawings, which illustrate Konstantin Velichkov’s translation, contribute to the better reception of Dante’s masterpiece. Thus, I will try to explore the relationship between the text and the iconic paratext, between the interlingual translation and the intersemiotic translation, by bringing out the empathy of the translator.

Keywords: Dante Alighieri; empathy; Gustavе
The essay analyses, in the novels Madame Chrysanthème (1887) by Pierre Loti and La Condition humaine (1933) by André Malraux, the strategies of representation and comprehension of cultural Alterity from these French writers, and their effects on the register of the text. In particular, the ironic mode will be distinguished from the tragic mode. In this sense, the difference between the auto-diegetic statute of Lotian narrator, and the polyphony of characters who animate Malraux’s novel has also been underlined.

Keywords: Pierre Loti; André Malraux; irony; tragedy; image of the Other
In literature just as in the art of painting, the representation of the romantic or pictorial hero is dependent on an antihero who designates, by the narration of facts or by the evocation of pictorial signs, the relationship, the influence or effect of one on the other. In Zola's tale The Convent we have tried to analyse the relationship between two little girls with different aspects in their behaviour by showing the link between their descriptions and the paintings by Manet. Since Zola and Manet are considered to be very good friends, this explains the inspiration they drew on from each other through their literary and artistic creations which contain echoes and correspondences, among other things, in the evocation of the status of the hero and the antihero.

Keywords: Zola; Manet; hero, antihero; correspondences; education; identity
Dorra Barhoumi Copyright (c) 2023 2023-09-17 2023-09-17 9 1 Artistic Fabulation: Novel Forms of Heroes in the Visual Arts https://ejournal.uni-sofia.bg/index.php/Colloquia/article/view/186
It is significant how the concept of Carlyle’s “heroic clear visuality” was challenged by late 19th-century Black Americans. Nicholas Mirzoeff points out two cases: Sojourner Truth’s tactic, “inverse visuality”, and W.E.B. Du Bois’ “veiled visuality”. My paper examines divergent art works or projects exhibited in 2021-22 to track how a shift from “heroic clear visuality” is present in new visual narratives which demand new ways of “looking”. In my view, new works are radical in their claim for a special form of opacity (Glissant): on the one hand, they recommend a more emphatic counter-visual narrative by Indigenous groups (the former anti-heroes). On the other hand, they demand a mode of bodily seeing – or rather sensing – with the represented (of new non-human heroes). (Haraway).

Keywords: counter visuality; opacity; seeing-with; biopolitics; Indigenous culture
Drunkenness and Intoxication: Critical Narratives about Edgar A. Poe and Alcohol

For almost two hundred years, the critical narrative presenting Edgar A. Poe’s use and misuse of alcohol has oscillated between two poles. On the one hand, mainly in the United States, his enemies, while he was still alive and soon after his death presented him as an alcoholic and a man of great talent, yet someone who deserved moral rebuke. On the other hand, Poe’s American admirers and his European modernist followers interpreted Poe’s relation with alcohol positively in two aspects. First, Poe’s drinking was a temporary escape from his miserable life in the American milieu of utilitarian and moralistic attitudes toward art. And, second, Poe was seen as a romantic and modernist artist finding in alcohol a path transcending reality and leading to the domain of pure art. The article studies the formation of the dual narrative of Poe’s drunkenness/intoxication in the United States and modernist France (and to a much lesser extent in Bulgaria and Russia). The study also sheds some light on Bulgarian criticism in both its popular and commercial version, as well as in its high modernist period presented by Bulgaria’s leading modernist and avant-garde artist Geo Milev (1895-1925). Bulgarian critics, when discussing Poe and alcohol, repeat in an impoverished fashion well-established American and European aspects of the narrative of Poe and alcohol.

Keywords: Edgar A. My goal is to explore some of the consequences of putting discourse into action to affect political or social change. It is important to understand how certain beliefs and conventions are constructed through the use of catastrophic language, symbolism, and imagery. To this end, I will examine how apocalyptic discourse shapes the way people see the world around them, using as examples works by Mario Sironi, Ludwig Meidner, and Stanley Donwood, while comparing them to the Benjaminean notion of “destructive character”, emphasising how the visual discourse structures space and time to unveil novel aspects of reality.

Keywords: apocalypse; catastrophic imaginary; non-places; visual art; creative destruction
The article examines Julia Kristeva’s novel Murder in Byzantium, in which a typical structuralist provincial-imperial model of the world order is deconstructed from the standpoint of post-structuralism. It is assumed that the appeal to the history of Byzantium has certain autobiographical grounds. In this way, Kristeva demonstrates the relativity of the concepts of ‘centre’ and ‘periphery’ from a historical perspective: Byzantium, Bulgaria, France, the United States eventually dissolve into the “global village”, which is embodied in the novel in the image of Santa Barbara.

Keywords: province; empire; post-structuralism; deconstruction; Julia Kristeva; Murder in Byzantium
Roman Dzyk Copyright (c) 2023 2023-09-17 2023-09-17 9 1
