Pierre Loti et André Malraux: ironie et tragédie des écrivains Français en Asie

Abstract

The essay analyses, in the novels Madame Chrysanthème (1887) by Pierre Loti and La Condition humaine (1933) by André Malraux, the strategies of representation and comprehension of cultural Alterity from these French writers, and their effects on the register of the text. In particular, the ironic mode will be distinguished from the tragic mode. In this sense, the difference between the auto-diegetic statute of Lotian narrator, and the polyphony of characters who animate Malraux’s novel has also been underlined. Keywords: Pierre Loti; André Malraux; irony; tragedy; image of the Other   L’article analyse, dans les romans Madame Chrysanthème (1887) de Pierre Loti et La Condition humaine (1933) d’André Malraux, les stratégies de représentation et compréhension de l’altérité du point de vue de ces Français en Asie, et leurs effets sur le registre du texte. En particulier on distinguera entre mode ironique et mode tragique. Dans ce sens on souligne aussi la différence entre le statut autodiégétique de la voix du narrateur lotien, et la polyphonie des personnages qui agitent le roman dе Malraux.
