Théophile Gautier et Edgar Poe

Abstract

RésuméOn a longtemps opposé l’imaginaire gautiéresque à celui de Poe, arguant d’une différence profonde de sensibilité et d’imaginaire fort étrangers l’un à l’autre. Sans doute ces différences existent-elles, mais elles ont empêché toute analyse sérieuse (il n’existe d’ailleurs aucune étude sur les rapports de Gautier à Poe, comme en témoigne la grande bibliographie exhaustive établie par Paolo Tortonese que l’on peut trouver sur internet). Or Gautier a été initié à Poe par Baudelaire et n’a cessé de témoigner de sa connaissance des oeuvres de l’écrivain américain par des allusions répétées.Mon propos est donc d’analyser le rapport de Gautier à l’oeuvre de Poe, rapport d’autant plus important à prendre en compte lorsque l’on sait combien Gautier lui-même exercera une influence fondamentale sur le symbolisme, sur Mallarmé et sur l’esthétique décadente pour lesquels Edgar Poe a été un maître.Mots-clefs: Fantastique noir ; ivresse ; magnétisme ; art pour l’art ; arabesque ; décadence.AbstractThéophile Gautier and Edgar PoeThe imagination of Théophile Gautier has long time been opposed to that of E. A. Poe, with the argument of a profound difference in sensitivity and imagination between them. No doubt, these differences exist, but they have prevented any serious analysis (there are no studies on the attitude of Gautier to Poe, as evidenced by the large comprehensive bibliography compiled by Paolo Tortonese that we can find on the Internet). However, Gautier was initiated to Poe through Baudelaire, and has demonstrated his knowledge of the works of the American writer by repeated allusions.My intention is to analyse Gautier’s attitude towards Poe's work, especially important when we know how Gautier himself exercised a fundamental influence on the symbolism, on Mallarme and on the aesthetic decadence for which Poe was a master.Key words: Gothic fiction; intoxication; magnetic attraction; art for art’s sake; arabesque; decadence.
